The BIGGER PICTURE on why almost 88% of TV reboots fail…
To the entire XENAVERSE! I want to clarify some things. I'm NOT by any means wishing for the reboot to fail, I'm not sitting around a fire chanting, trying to put a curse on the Xena new reboot. NO! As I always say, everyone has a right to do what they feel is best, to do what they believe in. Like the saying; "To each his own!" This Blog article I wrote about mostly failed TV reboots merely points out FACTS. Statistics and data, gathered via research. According to the facts and data, only 12% of TV series reboots over the last 30 years have been successful. I'm not the one saying it, the facts are!
So, even "IF" let's say for example ALL the Xenites just on Facebook start to support this Xena reboot, then that won't even put a dent in the real Xena fanbase all over the world! There are at least 100 000 Xena fans on Facebook that we know of. But during the time Xena aired there were at least 6 million viewers every week to watch the episodes. That is what I mean when I say that IF all the Xena fans on Facebook and Twitter suddenly say; “Yes, let’s all support this reboot wholeheartedly!”, it still won’t really matter… Hundred thousand fans against another 5.9 million out there? This data that says that only 12% of reboots are successful are AFTER some fans even supported the new cast of the reboot, but still there was a bigger problem. A problem that could NOT be corrected over a time span of 30 years of failed reboots. It has to mean something, right? The problem does not lie within the few fans on social media. It’s SO MUCH BIGGER than that!
Example: Why did the Wonder Woman reboot fail?
And I quote from the article from Deadline Hollywood 2011: “The audience just couldn’t buy into the modernization they tried to make with the reboot,” one insider said. There were early signs of resistance against updating the classic franchise and the character.” This was AFTER a large number of viewers were shown the first episode of the new reboot of Wonder Woman.
Variety Magazine had this to say about the problem why reboots fail: “Absence does make the heart grow fonder and finding a way to make the fans feel familiarity again is essential. Analysts argue that for a reboot to succeed, studios either need to let sufficient time pass between instalments, cook up a blisteringly original take on the material or some combination of both.”
I will say this again: I'm not by any means wishing for the Xena reboot to fail. All I am saying is, if THIS is the PROOF we have then the chances of the reboot being successful is around 12%. Regardless if some Xena fans on Facebook and Twitter stand by it and support it. That's not enough! The statistics prove it. There’s a BIGGER problem. Thus; XMC, Javier and others say that if we support the reboot and it is successful then MAYBE along the line there will be a crossover or movie with Lucy and Renee. Well great stuff!! BUT, that is IF the reboot is successful. Facts show it is unlikely even when a small number of fans still support the reboot with new cast and a new story... That is all I'm pointing out here. I'm saying that the whole concept around TV reboots are flawed deep inside the system. Why? Because the fans first need a chance to reconnect, build up trust, feel the familiarity they felt when watching the old series. That's what I'm trying to get out there and make people understand. I am not the enemy! I'm a Xenite. I support the cause and try to show people that maybe, just maybe, this flawed concept CAN be fixed by just looking at the facts, listening to the people and making some changes. I am a Xenite, and always will be!!
